Last Chance
for Animals

Last Chance for Animals (LCA) recognizes that animals
have the ability to experience pain, and as such
they deserve certain basic rights protecting them
from pain caused by humans. LCA believes that non-human
animals should not be subjected to suffering and
exploitation by humans because alternatives exist
for nearly every traditional "usage" of
animals. LCA was behing the HBO documentary "DEALING
DOGS" which exposes the abuses that took place
at one of America's most notorious Class B dealers
- Martin Creek Kennel in Arkansas.

Recycle your
bike

Recycle-a-Bicycle (RAB) was launched in the summer
of 1994. At the time, RAB was a project of Transportation
Alternatives, the New York City bicycle and pedestrian
advocacy group. We are now an independent organization
dedicated to youth development, environmental education,
recycling and bicycle transportation in New York
City.
Recycle-a-Bicycle offers bicycle maintenance and
repair workshops to youth between the ages of 10-18.
Class discussion places the mechanical work in the
context of the environmental benefits of recycling
and bicycle transportation. At some sites, it also
introduces students to the practical aspects of running
a small business. Additionally, we offer kids the
opportunity to participate in a sweat-equity "Earn-A-Bike" program,
in which extra work in the shop is credited toward
acquisition of a bicycle. Refurbished bikes in excess
of those earned by participating children are donated
to community organizations that run other outdoor
youth projects or sold to boost revenue.

Car Sharing
with Zip

Zipcar is the largest car sharing company in the
US. Recently they partnered with XM Satellite to
provide free service to the entire fleet. Zipcar
is now a critical element of the transportation network
of many North American cities, enabling residents,
students and businesses to get rid of their cars
and still meet their transportation needs. There
are three major green effects: 1) Members shed cars.
Over 40% of our members decide against purchasing
a car, or end up selling their car. 2) They drive
less. Car usage of individuals is reduced by as much
as 50%. 3) They use other transportation. Members
use the most efficient means of transportation for
the task—walking, biking, public transportation,
taxi, or Zipcar.

Green Home:
Environmental Store

Greenhome are in their fifth year of operation,
one of the longer-lasting environmental stores and
resource centers on the Internet. Greenhome offices
are still technically in a garage in the Richmond
District of San Francisco, though they have gotten
upgraded somewhat. There does still remain some question
as to whether it's actually a garage or a tropical
spaceship. That part may never change.
It did indeed all begin upstairs, in the living room of the founder Lawrence
Comras, with a series of discussions among some of the nation's foremost environmental
scientists, writers and thinkers, about what "green" really means.
Brought together through an extraordinary series of serendipitous meetings,
this core group attracted others of like mind, until about fifteen of us--some
huddled in the garage (we now have heat), others scattered across the country,
became the Green Home Team.

The Plant
in Dumbo

After making raw food respectable at Pure Food and
Wine—and a very public split with his partner—Matthew
Kenney has embarked on the second chapter in his
life as a vegan chef and raw-foodist. It’s
headquartered in a loftlike space in Dumbo, where
he’s opened the Plant, a retail shop, classroom,
and commissary kitchen for the fleet of Blue/Green
juice-bar/cafés he plans to infiltrate the
tri-state region with. He is starting with the Upper
East Side (203 E. 74th St., nr. Third Ave.; 212-744-0940),
and on the premises of the Plant itself. Unlike most
industrial kitchens, this one is equipped with a
coconut station (with a backsplash for errant splinters),
a dehydrator room, and a staff proficient at transforming
nuts and fruits into macadamia hummus, nori hand
rolls, and an utterly credible chocolate pudding. —Rob

Willie Nelson
Sellin' Biodiesel

Willie Nelson drives a Mercedes.
But do not lose faith, true believers. The exhaust
from Mr. Nelson's diesel-powered Mercedes smells
like peanuts, or French fries, or whatever alternative
fuel happens to be in his tank.
While Bono tries to change the world by hobnobbing
with politicians and Sir Bob Geldof plays host to
his mega-benefit concerts, Willie Nelson has birthed
his own brand of alternative fuel. It is called,
fittingly enough, BioWillie. And in BioWillie, Mr.
Nelson, 72, has blended two of his biggest concerns:
his love of family farmers and disdain for the Iraq
war.
BioWillie is a type of biodiesel, a fuel that can
be made from any number of crops and run in a normal
diesel engine. If it sounds like a joke, a number
of businesses, as well as city and state and county
governments, have been switching their transportation
fleets to biodiesel blends over the last year. The
rationale is that it is a domestic fuel that can
provide profit to farmers and that it will help the
environment, though environmentalists are not universally
enthusiastic about it.

Method Affordable
Green Products

Eric and Adam's kitchen was method's first "lab." The
goal was to evolve the household cleaner from a toxic
object that hid under the sink to an all-natural,
biodegradable, and stylish counter-top accessory.
Method began with a product line of five spray cleaners
designed by Michael Rutchik, delivered from store
to store on the back of a pick-up truck. The product
was such a success that Eric and Adam quickly recruited
a talented team to build the business, including
CEO Alastair Dorward (who had once rejected Eric
for a job) to lead the way.
By 2002, Method had added dish soap, rocketing past
generations of conventional bottles with a stunning
design and delivery system by Karim Rashid. In 2003,
method added hand wash, dilutable floor cleaners,
and wipes. In 2004, we have added a complete laundry
line and two lines of premium candles.
At method, they believe that your home is a reflection
of who you are and how you want to live, and we know
that you want to live clean.
